Week 4 – The Desire to Know Myself

Do you know the difference between your true self and your ego?

Many people don’t. In fact, they don’t even realize that there is a difference between the two. We must learn to know the difference between the two.

The ego is the image of ourselves that we have in our mind. We can say that the ego arises as a consequence of the activity of the mind. Everyone has an ego that can be useful if understood and used wisely. Most often this is not the case and we all fall into the trap of the ego which then grows stronger and takes more and more control over our lives. How does this happen? In fact, very imperceptibly, step by step…

There is a counter force to the ego. It allows you to overcome all of the ego’s fear, anxiety, worry, and scare tactics. It is your True Self. Maybe you have caught glimpses of it?

Perhaps one day you were floating in the ocean, warm sun at your face. As you lie there peacefully, all fear, worry, and anxiety left your spirit and you felt an exquisite calm. Perhaps it was while you were riding a bike. You were speeding down the roadway, cool wind in your face, and you felt, This is it. This is my peace, calm, happiness. Perhaps it was in the gym and you were pounding down on the treadmill, sweat pouring from your face, knowing that you were doing it, becoming that beautiful form that’s always been inside of you. Or maybe, like me, you were on a stage, speaking to a group of people, a hundred faces looking up at you, and you were giving them your message of hope.

You have had one of these moments. They are different for all people, but they are the same in that—for a brief moment—we catch a glimpse of our true selves and our egos are completely gone. In that moment, there is no fear, no worry—there is only you: infinite, kind, beautiful you.

All suffering is ego-created and caused by resistance. Your ego is a part of you, you can never be rid of it entirely; but you can learn to recognize and overcome it. The key is to carefully monitor your thoughts. You must remain aware. Happiness is slowing down and listening to the conversations inside your head.

If you can remember to do this, your true self will prevail over your ego every time.

In addition to recognizing and overcoming your ego, you must also embrace your true self. Seek out those moments that allow your true self to shine through. Create more of those moments for yourself. When you feel that sense of calm, exquisite, infinite peace in your soul—harness it. Capture that feeling and call upon it often. Stop living in the painful shadows of your ego. Allow your true self to begin guiding your life.

In other words, the subconscious mind causes us to begin to feel emotionally or physically uncomfortable whenever we try to do something new or different or establish a new way of behaving. It does so to warn us that we are out of homeostasis. And since he has no logic, he does not know whether getting out of homeostasis - the comfort zone is positive for us or not, that is, he considers the change for the better a threat because it throws him out of the existing balance.

Hence the fear of failure, but also the fear of success. The fear of success is as present in all of us as the fear of failure. We are afraid of our potentials as well as our shortcomings, we are afraid of that part of ourselves whose indication we see in perfect moments of inspiration, in ideal conditions of our greatest strength and self-confidence. We enjoy those own highest possibilities that resemble the divine in the moments when we merge with our True Self - that is our true nature. But at the same time we tremble with fear when we look at those same possibilities. Because we think that if we become successful, we can be discovered that we are actually fraudsters and know nothing. It’s all his ego story just to keep everything the same.

We all have a deep-rooted subconscious sense of guilt that is imprinted in us. There are various expressions of guilt, but one of the types of guilt that we can unconsciously feel and that sabotages us from realizing our full potential is guilt that we do better than others.

It is not pleasant to move from the known to the unknown, but it is necessary and very promising. What it takes for change to succeed is our intention. True intent. The change we are talking about here is a fundamental change, not just a cosmetic and temporary one. We are talking about changing our state of existence - thoughts and feelings. We all have an ego identity that is accustomed to certain behaviors. Changing that identity necessarily faces change. But imagine a caterpillar that doesn’t want to turn into a butterfly. There is no such resistance in nature - evolution happens spontaneously and naturally. So it is with us, because in each of us lies a wisdom that knows how to heal, to transform, but people are blessed with a consciousness that often, instead of leading to progress, hinders. True intent means committing to change completely.
True intention means appearing every day for yourself.
If you say to yourself, "I want to change, but I don't know how," that's an excuse again. Ask yourself: am I really ready to change? In order to remove resistance to change, we need to be aware of it. We must intend to trust the process of change, especially in times when we do not know what is happening and who we are. Because those are the moments when things really move!
Moving resistance to change means allowing change to happen. We move ourselves out of the way and let our innate wisdom do what needs to be done.

The first half of life is devoted to forming a healthy ego, the second half is going inward and letting go of it.

  1. Ivan, your blog on Ego was so inspiring and full of great gems. Here are two statements that really uplifted my soul: “In addition to recognizing & overcoming your ego, you must also embrace your true self. Seek out those moments that allow your true self to shine through. Create more of those moments that allow your true self to shine.” Thanks for sharing these pearls of wisdom.
